The last POTUS to declare war on Blighty was James Madison in 1812 who fled Washington when military forces sailed down the Potomac from Canada. The soldiers weren't complete barbarians as they drank the White House's winery and booze reserves dry before torching it to the ground. Makes you proud to be British.

Of course it's a grift. It couldn't be anything else:

Trump ‘to ask countries in Gaza Board of Peace to pay $1bn to keep membership’
Countries on Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” for Gaza will be asked to contribute $1bn to keep their membership for more than three years, according to reports.
According to the draft, Mr Trump would serve as the board’s chair and decide on who is invited to be a member.
The draft also reportedly suggests that Mr Trump would control the money himself, and that it would allegedly go towards rebuilding Gaza.
That "allegedly" is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

I wonder if this is related to the Supreme Court tariffs decision, which one presumes will go against him. He's got no sense of governance at all, apart from unilateral gestures, so if tariffs aren't allowed, what does that leave him? He'll get bored with reducing the numbers of black people at universities, so that leaves threatening invasion.

My hope is that Greenland is a relatively painless way of (enough) Republicans in the Senate and courts to realize he does have to be stopped.

This chap is a rare beacon of sense. I have him and others on bookmarks, and read their comments without the replies.

I did though have a glance BTL. Some chap said "this is Starmer throwing the EU under the bus to keep in Trump's good books". He got lots of likes. Despite Starmer having very obviously agreed with the EU just now.

Hoping there's enough sane or honourable Republicans in Congress to thwart Trump's military ambitions is an outside bet. He'll probably ignore Congress anyway and tell his yes man generals to go ahead with invading Canada in the winter.
His correspondence with the Norwegian PM leaves it hard not to conclude Trump's lost his marbles.

You need only 4 Republican senators to make a difference, They actually got 5 to join the Democrats on Venezuela, but Trump sweet talked 2 down. So that's Collins, Murkowski, Rand Paul and one other. That's doable.

Do the military want to seize Greenland? I'd be surprised.

The US military already know about the long-standing agreement with Denmark whereby the USA can put as many troops and weapons on Greenland as they feel are necessary for national security.

It's not about US national security. It's all about Greenland's rich natural resources and who gets to exploit them.

Doesn't matter what they think, Trump's the commander in chief who gives the orders. Europe isn't going to back down from Trump's tariff threats so he'll either fold or up the ante.

So to punish Norway, he's going to invade Greenland? Does he think Norway is part of Denmark or vice-versa?
