Started because I’m genuinely worried that a foul combination of circumstances - economic problems (the legacy of 14 years’ ruinous Tory government), the rise of the far right, getting closer to elected power, political mis-steps by progressive parties, actual race riots on our streets, increased racial intolerance and homophobia, all ot it……

…… seem to be combining to lead to a replay of Germany in 1933 - and we know what happened after that.

It genuinely is causing me almost existential angst, and fears for the next generation .

Everybody else okay ?

In a word, Abers?

No.

I'm terrified what kind of world my two great-nephews (11 and 8) will inherit from us.

Weimar made many mistakes and ultimately it probably still would have survived without the crash in 1929, however we know that could happen.

That radio series with Katja Hoyer that Oboogie pointed out was a superb listen - and worrying too.

I worry about bringing up my daughter in all of this - what she'll inherit, and what she'll be exposed to in the process. I only hope I can teach her to protect herself and make good choices.

The Farage loving idiots in East coast constituencies are going to have to worry about dinghies for themselves as they'll be the first victims of rising sea levels.
The human race doesn't collectively give enough of a toss about the future if it means cutting back on our facile consumerist lifestyles. Oceans are polluted and depleting, habitats burned and destroyed and species extinction accelerating. No wonder the birthrate is plummeting and a good thing to. A global population stabilising below a billion living sustainable lifestyles might just save the future. Damn right I'm angst ridden and depressed about the future.

I watched a YT video earlier where one commenter remarked how wasteful us humans are. For some reason that prompted me to look up the population of Earth in 1972 and now, and the figures are 3.8 billion to 8.3 billion. Surely that rate of growth's unsustainable - and yet politicians spend all their time going on about "growth", which is usually of a consumerist nature.

The thing is, Weimar was born out of a humiliating defeat and was never really popular with the German people.

Germans don't like any government, especially if they are confronted by change. They would rather just have a village warden and for everyone to just keep the noise down a bit.

Farage's stopped clock moment is pointing out that any fool can increase GDP by increasing the population but does it even raise the per capita living standard? India has a far larger GDP than Finland, so what?
Although Farage now believes they're aren't enough people in Britain and young Aryan women should be having more babies.

I'm not a young man any more, but I remember Winston's words during our darkest days.
You can always take one with you.
Not to mention the "East Renfrewshire Young Team" are a shower of prep-school bed-wetters.

I'm not particularly sure about that, I think Kreuzberger is spot on. The Weimar became a default for what is wrong but in a way the people pretty much created it, not to mention those that were potentially leaders seemed to be popped off. Effectively it wasn't doomed to fail and probably would have survived but post Ebert it was effectively electing people who wanted to destroy it.

Still it lasted longer than the 3rd Reich.

Probably worth considering how many chancellors and how much uncertainty it had with lessons to learn.
