I've noticed looking at this Wikipedia entry for holders of stewards of the Chiltern Hundreds that when David Davies had his resignation in 2008, he held the post for nearly a year so I presume that it is not a barrier to seeking re-election then. I guess that's my question answered.

Abernathy wrote: Wed Jul 08, 2026 7:57 pm An interesting question, to which I think the answer must be no. The sole purpose of the continued existence of the archaic Stewardship of the Manor of Northstead and The Chiltern Hundreds is to facillitate the resignations of MPs. Crazily, MPs cannot ever resign, but have to automatically sack themselves by “seeking a paid office of the crown” - of which the Manor of Northstead and the Chiltern Hundreds are the only two remaining.

At a guess, once you’ve got the Manor of Northstead gig there’s probably nothing to stop you jacking it in immediately.
They get sacked whenever they want.

Binface on Newsnight, declaring that you can slap on the side of a bus that he'll save the country £300k by doing nothing if he wins, because it'll save the country a second by-election.

Well played.

Bookies offering 4/1 on Binface, apparently.

Thinking about the way that the by-election is likely to play out, it strikes me that it might hinge on two things :

- The extent to which Farage can get the good voters of Clacton to buy into his "Infamy, infamy - they've all got it infamy !" Frogface vs The Establishment victim bollocks.

and/or

- The extent to which Binface is able to sustain the level of already highly effective ridicule to which he is subjecting Frogface over a campaign that could take six weeks.

Easy to underestimate the former, I'm afraid, but all of my best hopes and wishes go with Binface for the latter.

Yes, mate of mine told me of that this morning.

I have just learned that Binface’s alter ego is a writer for HIGNFY, which tends to suggest he will be more than able to keep up the pace in terms of relentless ridicule.

So that explains why a lot of his material is derivative and unfunny.

I haven’t watched HIGNFY in ages, so can’t comment. But Binface seems pretty sharp and witty whenever I’ve seen him.

Perhaps he’s wasted on Hislop and co.

If ever a programme had outstayed its welcome, it's HIGNFY.

I'd rather listen to the News Quiz; if nothing else, you're spared Hislop and Merton.

Writers on HIGNFY select stories and provide material for the guest presenter, Hislop and Merton don't need them - that's why they're there.

Crabcakes wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2026 12:02 pm Well this is interesting. Why would Reform need to divert resources from the serious contest of Mayor of Manchester to an alleged one horse race in Clacton?

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... on-contest
Sounds like Farage isn't confident he'll win. He may have good reason to be nervous - anecdotally I've seen a lot of Vox pops featuring disenchanted Clacton Reform voters complaining Farage has done nothing for the town.

I would imagine it'll be a very low turnout, but he'll win. Unless of course, there's some clever plot to get Count Binface to win so the parliamentary investigation gets dropped?

Fuck you Nigel Farage, you attention seeking cunt, fuck you very much!
Usually joyless Kemi appears to be enjoying herself over Farage's self inflicted predicament. Have to admit I'm pleased for her.

Farage, Jenrick and Tice are under criminal investigation, of course she's enjoying it. It's a desperate, uncomfortable position I find myself in - welcoming a possible Tory revival - hopefully it will be marginal.
