It’s because such people don’t actually care if politicians are in it for themselves, as long as they also get a slice of what they want.

That slice might be some group or other you don’t like getting short shrift, or material gain in tax cuts that’ll favour you and so on. The idea someone might want to hold office just to do good doesn’t add up to them, because they would always want to know what’s in it for them?

The ultimate expression of this is, of course, Trump. Wholly corrupt and utterly disgusting, driven entirely by arrogance, greed and lust. And loved by Christian conservatives, who should obviously find him abhorrent if they even slightly believed what they claim to, because he also doesn’t like gays and foreigners.

Reform councillors in Kent appear to have discovered there is such a thing as being too patriotic, after their national anthem ploy backfired.


Shortly after coming top in May’s local elections, Reform UK voted to conclude every Kent County Council meeting with the singing of God Save the King.

But Green councillor Mark Hood hatched a devious plan to catch his colleagues off guard – by singing past the first verse.

At the end of a five-hour meeting on July 16, most of the councillors sang just the familiar first verse of the national anthem before sitting back down.

Disappointed by their seeming lack of stamina, Hood and his Green colleague Stuart Jeffery whipped out a pile of lyric sheets, handed them out to Labour and Lib Dem members, and launched into the next verse.

Even after the pre-recorded backing music stopped, they kept up their recital until Reform council chair Jeremy Eustace demanded they cut it out.

Hood said: ‘We got to the start of the fourth verse, and the chairman of the council started banging his gavel.

‘I remarked, “But I’ve got another three verses”. He told us both to sit down immediately and that I would be receiving a letter.

‘I haven’t had a letter yet.’

Council leader Linda Kemkaran suggested the incident – in stark contrast to Reform’s belting out of the national anthem at the end of every session – was ‘attention-seeking behaviour’.

Well, they said they wanted to sing the national dirge after every meeting.

They really don't like other people playing by their rules.

Zia Yusuf has been told off by Farage for calling Ben Wallace a traitor because Wallace criticized (in fairly moderate terms) the Reform prison policy. Quite awkward for Reform given how much they're making of inflammatory language against them at the moment.

Banks does have a history of using SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) in order to try and shutdown any journalistic investigations into his murky financial dealings. Which is rather ironic given how Reform like to bang on about freedom of speech.
