Swinney says £180,000 funding for tournament at Trump's golf course not designed to 'butter up' US president
Scottish government funding for a golf tournament at Donald Trump’s Aberdeenshire course was not an attempt to “butter up” the US president, John Swinney has said.

As PA Media reports, the Scottish government announced on Saturday that £180,000 of public money would be spent to bring the Nexo Championship to Scotland next month – just days before the first minister met Trump.
Which might be a sensible use of public money, in fairness, given Trump's power. But the National will be apoplectic. It had 7 Labour politicians on the front as the guilty men the other day. None had handed out £180k to my knowledge.

Seemingly, little coverage has been given to an agreement whereby tariffs will magically be eased on Scotch whiskies. That £180k is a transparent bribe, but it must come as an enormous relief within rural communities and to The Treasury.

The SNP are not weakening, but they should be with this sort of thing. Do they even have the power to do this? Is the purpose a row with Westminster and a talking point about how they want to stick it to neoliberals?

Who advised Mr Swinney that cow's milk, cheese, battery chickens and eggs are essential healthy food, Fanny Craddock from 1970?

Mr Swinney, a huge character with a massive personal following, what have I missed?

Nicola to be played by Sally Lindsay.

Channel 5 is reuniting with the producers of Power: the Downfall of Huw Edwards for a drama about how Nicola Sturgeon’s estranged husband embezzled £400,000 from the Scottish National party and the impact it had on her reputation.

To Nicola, Love Peter will examine the couple’s relationship over the 12-year period that Peter Murrell diverted funds from the SNP while he was the chief executive to spend on items including a £124,550 motorhome and more than £2,600 on a pair of luxury salt and pepper grinders.

Murrell was arrested in 2023, and Sturgeon subsequently discovered that the man who helped build her career and shared her life with had deceived and betrayed her.

After it emerged he had embezzled money to buy items such as a Jaguar SUV, Montblanc pens and luxury watches by falsifying invoices and using secret codes, he was jailed this summer for five years and three months.

If not Sally Lindsay, then it will be Jill Halfpenny with Jason Watkins as Peter Murrell. Now, if this were an English political scandal, it would be on ITV and written by Jeff Pope.
