Oh fair enough.

What was Rees-Mogg saying?

Obviously, Castle Point won't be lost in a general election, but would be interesting if this happened. Not all bad for the Tories maybe if they can get some other mugs in their areas to be the face of failing services?

I've seen a few tories rebrand themselves as local independents (until you check the small print on their leaflets).

As for Mogg, my bad. If he was clarifying that an out of date ID card was OK if the image was still good, and that election officials should remember that, then actually credit where due, stopped clock, and so on. But the report I read this morning (Indie or Huffington Post, I think) made it sound like "oh go on, he's a mate, knows which way to vote".

Labour retains Sunderland
Labour has retained control of Sunderland City Council after winning 13 seats, PA reports.

The council has so far declared 18 out of the 25 seats up for election, including two gains for Labour and one for the Liberal Democrats.

Labour went into the election with control of the council and now has enough seats to retain its majority.
Labour vote share up a lot- got hit by UKIP in 2019. Tories up a bit, but getting much less of the ex-UKIP vote. Reform enough to be a nuisance to the Tories, but down a lot on UKIP.

Uh oh. Tories held all their seats in Broxbourne. Are they going to do better in the Blue Wall than expected? Maybe, but don't think Lib Dems are very strong there.

LDs ousted the Tories in Windsor and Maidenhead. Tory council leader went down to a 22 year old noob, like it was last night at the conference.

Encouraging results for those of us who think a Labour landslide under FPTP will lead to the Tories back to power within decade.

I'm already seeing tiresome "Bring Back Boris!" nonsense on Twitter, and it isn't even nine o'clock yet.

I think today is shaping up very nicely indeed.

Not major in the grand scheme of things, but North West Leicestershire has gone from Con to NoC, this is Bridgen land and it was the coterie of incompetent bullies he relied on at GE time so he didn’t have to do any campaigning, and now coupled with him being thrown out of the party, and called a liar by a judge, I think it’s a constituency that has a good chance of reverting to red.

Rishi Sunak has just delivered a statement to broadcasters about the election results. It is unusual for a PM to comment so early in the day, when most of the results are not yet in, but Sunak’s general message was that he was ploughing on anyway.

When it was put to him that the former leader of Medway council said the Tories lost power there because of the government’s record, Sunak replied:

We’ve only had a quarter of the results in.

Actually, we’re making progress in key election battleground like Peterborough, Bassetlaw, Sandwell.

But the message I am hearing from people tonight is that they want us to focus on their priorities, and they want us to deliver for them.

And that’s about halving inflation, growing the economy. reducing debt, cutting waiting lists and stopping the boats. That’s what people care about. That’s what they want us to deliver. And that’s why the government are going to work very hard to do.
I get that he has to try to put a positive spin on things, but FFS, he could lose every single councillor and still be bleating about how this just means he's been vindicated.
