She can play whatever she wants. She'll go down as one of the biggest wastes in Labour history.

How much clearer could that letter of hers actually have been? She replied to someone else saying that Jews and travellers experienced racism with "it's like having ginger hair, they didn't have to sit at the back of a bus".

She's already apologised for it. Sort of. She claimed it was an unchecked draft (except she had a week's cooling off period before publication date).
Now she says she meant it.
Is she lying now or when she apologised, because they can't both be true.

It's Trumpian.

I see Owen Jones is already doing the football supporter approach to politics and saying she shouldn't be suspended because she was talking about lived experience.

What does she know about Jewish lived experience? Jews look white if you see them strolling round town, unless they're orthodox. But if they have the temerity to attend a synagogue, a Jewish school, or stick up a sign with their name on it outside a business they own, then they're instant less white.

It's more than that, Diane Abbott has never been made to sit at the back of a bus so it's not her lived experience either, it's something she's read about - the same as the rest of us.

I'm sure she has lived experience of racism. But as you say, she's read about bus segregation. She can read about pogroms and the Holocaust while she's about it.

For your sanity, don't go BTL at the Guardian today.

I did, but I think I got away with it.

I know otherwise perfectly reasonable people, paragons of equity in all dealings with anyone, who will lose their shit over Travellers, and view them all as filthy career criminals who need "sorting out". Prejudice seems to be based on perception of lifestyle, but as soon as they know someone's from a Traveller background, they'll start talking about how you can "tell they're a Pikey".

Racism isn't one size fits all, and doesn't always make sense. Almost as if it's inherently irrational and ignorant.

Without trivialising the threats she's endured, how much genuine discrimination has she ever received? She went to Cambridge, have a successful career then entered politics and became a shadow Cabinet minister. There doesn't seem much victimhood there, and in a wider context she's never had to worry about lynching, judicial murder, persecution or torture. There are many people in the world who've suffered a lot more than Diane Abbott.

She has consistently "topped" the league table of the most racially abused MPs in England, and has been called to be gunned down in cold, racially-aggravated blood by a leading Tory donor.

Indeed, there are many people in the world who've suffered a lot more than Diane Abbott, but these do not include you, me, or Robert fucking Peston.

That's the one.

I don't think that I am alone in thinking that Abbott is a pompous twat of marginal cognitive capacity, but I know whose side I am on and will be until my dying breath.

Two things can be true

1. Diane Abbott has been a victim of racist abuse and death threats.

2. What Diane Abbot said was offensive, ignorant, and crass.

Also

3. Diane apologised for those comments, then she backtracked and said I meant them all along.

4. Diane was blatantly trying to get suspended so she can use it as an excuse to quit Labour and join Jez's new outfit, which will be announced at around conference time to cause maximum damage.

It's a great pity that someone who could have been such a positive force for the Labour Party, and for the country, should end her Parliamentary career regarded as a pain in the arse by most of the party and a figure of fun by the rest of the country.

Unfortunately she served long enough for people to start asking "Why is she still here?" rather than "Why did she go so early?".
