Weoley Castle is something of a hot spot for nasty white nationalists, some of whom have been decking every fucking lamp post in the area with flags of St George. Other parts of town have Palestinian flags on nearly every lamp stand.

You aren’t supposed to hang anything from lamp posts at all, and the council is just trying to keep things safe. Of course, as you’ll gather, it has been hijacked by the followers of the frogman as yet another bit of racist ragebait.

It's causing us a whole host of problems basically, they've hung the flags up to show pride in our area, their words, not mine anyway, because they hung them up on lampposts that the council has to take them down for the reasons Abers suggested. Of course, this is what they wanted all along.

With hundreds of St George’s and Union flags being tied to lampposts around south west Birmingham over recent weeks, Birmingham City Council has issued a statement on street lighting improvements to improve energy efficiency.
The statement issued on Tuesday (12th August) regarding the routine planned work, says that ‘unauthorised attachments’ are routinely removed and states: “People who attach unauthorised items to lampposts could be putting their lives and those of motorists and pedestrians at risk.”

Reaction to flags

The much talked about flags have been popping up around Weoley Castle, West Heath, Northfield and Bartley Green, proving to be a divisive issue on social media.

Many locals appear to support the display of pride in the English and Union flags – many donating time, flags or money to expand the display. One Facebook group member wrote: “I’m loving seeing the flags around Northfield etc, as we really don’t celebrate being British like we should. Keep them coming.”

However, some have expressed concern that the flying of the flags may have a political motivation and could cause more division in our communities. Another group member wrote: “The bloke doing it is positioning it as a proud, positive, community initiative. A cursory look at his profile will show his strident views on immigration.

Round here they want to change the lamps to LED too but can't get access to the one in my garden as it is surrounded by a large Hebe that also has some fucking fearsome brambles growing through it. I am one of the last outposts (sorry) of the orange glow of low pressure sodium...

In a village near to where I live they have a flag pole next to the community centre, when somebody in the village dies who has made a contribution to the village they fly a flag at half mast as a show of respect. Sometimes it's the George cross or Union flag or on other occasions it might be a flag relevant to the person who has died. People in the village really appreciate the gesture and it is always well received. If the village constantly flew the George Cross or the Union Flag after awhile it would just become meaningless.

Sounds like the place is becoming Ulster-ised. 'Round here I've came to the conclusion that hanging any national fleg from a lamppost is showing it disrespect.
