Yep, See the opposition to water bills rising. That's not mostly to pay the cost of "neoliberalism" or whatever, it's to pay for the cost of the reservoirs, sewers and leak fixes that are needed. Bills were kept relatively low for a decade, even though Ofwat must have known that wasn't sustainable. I suppose it's easy for me to say so as someone comfortably off but I'm impressed so far with the Government's determination to get the infrastructure paid for and built. They'll get no thanks for it. You'll know I'm not a fan of political cartoons at the best of times, but here's one that sums this stuff up for me.

Who knew that building infrastructure to keep sewage out of rivers might take time? Useless Labour Government should have sorted it yesterday.

Labour are going to end up like the Democrats.

And both the Democrats and Labour are positioning themselves antagonistically to those whose sharper expressions of political vision are hugely popular with those who are abandoning them. Senior Democrats might still not endorse New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, who is posting stunning polling leads. Labour disciplines MPs for rebelling against benefit cuts, even as hundreds of thousands of people register their support for a new party.
Yeah, leading the polls as a Democrat in New York City isn't that impressive when you consider that's it's New York City. As for Your Party well Corbyn and Sultana are fighting amongst themselves.

Comments are the usual binfire

The main similarity (and, oddly, difference) between politics in the U.K. and US right now, is that Labour are in power but seem too timid to do anything. Whereas the Democrats aren’t in power and also seem too timid to do anything.
Labour won a massive majority and so had space to make immediate, courageous change knowing the next GE was 4-5 years away. The could have raised taxes, introduced electoral reform, introduced Leveson 2, tackled child poverty, stopped sending arms to Israel, pushed the green agenda, etc…But instead they told us all how awful it all is and will only get more awful. What good they did was drowned out in poor comms and own goals.

I’m not in the US but the impression from abroad is the Dems have been stunned into silence. Shocked timidity is my impression.

And, all the time, Trump is in control and Reform are gaining ground. The far right is terrifying and we need and deserve better liberal political parties.
Outside of Leveson 2 Labour have in fact done all of these things in one form or another.

Democrats seem to have a handy lead in the generic ballot for a party that are losing badly. Nor is it hard to find Democrats pushing back very strongly v Trump. What people mean when they say "they aren't doing anything" is that Schumer and Jeffries are fairly quiet. But American politics doesn't work like our politics. When the Democrats held the House and Senate, nobody cared what Paul Ryan or Mitch McConnell were saying. There's not a "leader of the opposition" like here. JB Pritzer and Gavin Newsome are much more vocal and better at it than the Congressional leaders.

The Democrat is up in NYC? I mean, that's incredible. The Democrat is up in the Virginia Governor race too, ex-secret agent, Abigail Spanberger.

I keep seeing lots of news about renewable energy projects, for a party without a green agenda. This stuff is basically dishonest. Nice sighting of arms to Israel there. Does she know what the Government have actually done?
