That "rights of illegal immigrants above rights of British people" narrative appears to have taken hold. It was a headline in the Mail and on GBNews yesterday. Some people are even using it as a direct quote from either Cooper or the government lawyers. I've searched through the details of the case and there is nothing even approaching that being made as a point.
My bet is that the popular memory will install it as something that Cooper said before, during or after the case.

Does anyone ever hear from her apart from rubbish like this? There doesn't seem to be any sort of positive challenge to the government. Wouldn't you expect the party of business to talk sometimes about some area of the economy where opportunities for growth aren't being grasped? Some tax that could be reformed? What's the health policy? The transport policy? The trade policy (apart from "Labour's negotiated and we've lost")?

Such a policy falls to bits when it comes in to contact with the most elementary of mathematics - the costs of further extraction are rising, as are those of decommissioning old facilities, while the price of a renewable MWh tumbles to around a third of fossil fuels.

What Badenoch's showing is that the Tory Right are basically nothing without their media allies, who've mostly switched to Farage. The Lib Dems haven't gone ahead of the Tories yet, but they might do (not least with Labour switchers), even though the Lib Dems look well placed to win more seats than the Tories,

As I keep saying, Badenoch doesn't seem to have any strategy for young professionals or indeed professionals generally.

For an alleged "straight-A student" she's being remarkably dense. Electricity in this country would be cheaper if renewables weren't pegged to the cost of gas.

If it were practicable (and I could afford it) I'd have solar panels on my south-facing roof and use them to charge an electric car.

As I type this, according to https://grid.iamkate.com/ the UK is actually earning money from its renewable energy by exporting it: no less than 78% of our electricity is coming from renewables.

I notice now that nobody knows what degree class Badenoch got. I think we'd have heard about if she got a First. Was she let down by "low expectations" at university too? Not that I'm particularly fussed with degree class or A level grades, but I'm not the one claiming to be cleverer than everyone else.

We have had panels in service on our south-west facing roof for about a month now. There are just 2x500w PVs up there plus the converter gizmo and a 2 megawatt battery, yet they have produced enough juice to cover way more than half of our consumption.

Granted, it is August but the total investment of less than €700 (VAT-free) should be recouped within two years.

For context, I switched to hippy-lecky in 2010 and have been paying €75* per month for our annual +/- 2,100 kWh ever since. Most years, we get a reimbursement, which is immediately spirited off to a very agreeable French bistro down the road.

* It would be less if I bothered my arse to switch.

I have seen it suggest that one of the tories' biggest problems is that they no longer have their slavishly partisan media mates to protect them, as they have largely defected to Farage's boudoir.

I guess we will find out tomorrow at 06:10 BST when Today does its first trawl of the newspapers.
