(The Sound Lounge is a decent music venue and café in Sutton)
Last night outside the Sound Lounge, at around 9:30pm whilst we had a (beautiful) live music event happening, we were confronted by around 20+ white males with massive ladders putting up union flags at the top of the lamp posts outside the venue.
I, a woman on my own, spoke to them to them to ask what they are were doing, I did not shout. I did not call them any names. Two of them were close to my face calling me f*****g c**t and repeatedly shouting “tell me what country you are from? What country do you live in?”. It was intimidating. At one point a group of them were around me shouting at me at the same time.
The only reason we are sharing these details is to highlight that they were not trying to bring people together or create unity.
OUTCOME:
1. The flags were put up across the high street. Nobody was hurt.
2. Now, more than ever, we have to stand for kindness and humanity. We are aware of the business-owners on the high street from Hong Kong, India and other part of the world. One, we spoke to last night who was working alone in his shop, was really worried. We need to be VISIBLE about standing up for each other so they don’t feel alone & we need to NOT give in to hate.
3. Not giving in to hate, includes not hating the people who are putting up flags. We HAVE to be more elevated than that. These people have stories. They have reasons. We don’t have to agree with them but the least we can do is listen
ACTION:
With that in mind & to ensure no individual or community in Sutton is feeling intimidated or under threat right now, we do not want to erase the voices of these men, we want to add to the flag display to celebrate ALL our diverse communities, which of course includes St George (a Turkish economic migrant with Syrian father & Palestinian mother)
and our Union flag celebrating all the nations that make up the United Kingdom

PLEASE bring your flags of the country you are from, your LGBTQ+ flags, human rights flags, peace flags or silks….anything we can hang from our lamp posts. Let’s make Sutton High Street a display of PEACE & LOVE and DIVERSITY
Bring your items to The Sound Lounge from 10:30am today and we will sort out the rest.

The moneychangers have fled from their high seats in the temple of our civilization. We now restore that temple to the ancient truths. The measure of the restoration lies in the extent to which we apply values more noble than mere monetary profit.
