Racism takes many forms in the UK and probably across most of the Christian west. Of course, there is naked hatred and, in a sense, that is easier to confront.
What is far more cancerous is this underlying understanding and ingrained belief that people of colour are, well, simply inferior. It is just the natural order of things and nothing to concern yourself with. It's how I was brought up at home, at school, on the telly, everywhere. Even "Rock Against Racism" oozed the white saviour mentality.
In truth, and to my enduring shame, so pervasive was and is this that I still have to catch my breath sometimes. (There, said it.)
I don't doubt that these flagwankers are racist, and this is not to let them off the hook, but they are also damaged and abused children who have never been forced to confront prejudice or to understand how deeply it harms them, too. Perhaps the next generation will finally be able to dilute this mental illness to such a point that it bears no significance, but seeing these Reform Schoolers, proves to me, at least, that we still have far too far to go.
