I got involved in recreational play as a Postgraduate when the USA and Japanese students who stayed behind for summer organised games.
Some field positions are very specialised, but a cricket guy could do a decent job standing in the deep and swinging and hoping at bat.

I persuaded a few to have a go at cricket, but the rules and timescales aren't beginner friendly.

A decade of chaotic Tory psychodrama has left most political lobby journalists unable to do their job in more normal political times. Reporting on dull ministers getting on with implementing policies to improve the country is Kryptonite for Mason, Watt, Kuenssberg etc.
