Apparently Tommy Robinson has answered Farage's call to arms and is urging his supporters to go to Southampton tonight. A number of police officers unconnected to the case have received death threats and been forced to move their families to safety.

For what it's worth, my thoughts are that we have two things colliding here.

The first is that if the police are confronted with what they've been told is a racist attack, then, racist attacks being more common than random Sikhs going crazy with a knife, they are going to assume it's a racist attack.

The second is the British Disease - something that has blighted workplace culture since the UK took a collective, exhausted, decade off during the 'fifties - doing the absolute minimum required to say that you've done your job. The police officers in question clearly exhibited no curiosity about the circumstances, asked no questions, assumed everything.

A fucking mess, but indication that there is institutional racism against white people? Fuck off.

If anything these kinda of tragedies are the exception that proves the rule, re supposed racism against whites. The fact that this kind of thing is so rare, that it is leapt upon so vigorously and loudly, does not indicate to me that these are the lived experiences of the vast majority of the country. It feels confected. What actual repression do these people receive that is based on their race? What language is riddled with anti white wording? And so on.

I'd imagine people would point to economics and supposed 'PC' discourse. The first has fuck all to do with race, the second is a confected hate storm that pivots on the idea that being polite is a sin, if it in any way makes one have to think a bit about what one says. Fuck off. Snowflakes.

I think we're conflating 2 distinct things.

First, there's Nowak. Yes, the police fucked up. Their primary concern should have been to check his wounds and stabilise him, and then to work out if he needed arresting or not. Face it, when you're strapped to a stretcher, you're not running off anywhere. That's a disciplinary/training issue. Ideas about a "Henry's law" are redundant - what we need is a review of how existing law is applied.

Second, the treatment of the killer in custody. He was treated as any suspect should have been treated. He was later treated as anyone convicted of murder should be treated. But they're two separate events involving different people.

Finally, bans on knives are unworkable. While I think a machete isn't a pre-requisite for the weekly trip to Asda, I'm aware that a lot of people - trades in particular - need a blade on them to do their jobs. And if you think a box cutter or Stanley knife can't do some damage, then I've got a magic sword to sell you. It's been suggested before, it's been dissected before.

As for Fargle and his thugs, fuck 'em.

Unfortunately, police are not equipped with lie detectors. And as is said by KW, a brown skinned young man getting attacked by a young white man is more commonplace than the reverse. Assault descends into brawl - not impossible.

Also, as said, the treatment of one person in this sorry mess has no effect on the treatment of the other. Had the killer been dragged down the station and thrown a few times down the stairs, it would not have helped Nowak's odds of survival at all.
