A key thing to remember here is that all journalists are full of shit. They make out as if they're the font of all knowledge, but in reality they know fuck and all. They're the kids from school who jumped onto any passing trend, declaring themselves its biggest fan, while knowing nothing about it.

They don't even have to look back to the SDP. UKIP, led by the very same person who leads Reform now, was romping home in by-elections as recently as 2014. Cameron had already played the referendum card, but it didn't seem to be doing him much good. Nonetheless, the Tories won a majority in 2015 on the back of some well-timed real income growth. Labour can't really play its strongest card v Reform yet- that they're mad Trump goons- for obvious reasons. Add in the Greens having some unpopular policies which lots of people don't know about, it's a pretty ridiculous position to say that it's all over.

This complete obsession with personalities is unlike anything we've experienced before. Thatcher and Tebbitt got some, but apart from that the sheer hatred of people rather than policy is unprecedented. Starmer, Lammy, Reeves, Rainer, Phillips. They all get it and one day someone will be killed.

Lucky The Sun have got such a trusted brand. Otherwise people might suspect they were making it up.- a conclusion not exactly discouraged by her having to clarify that he wasn't speaking on his phone at all, but talking on a train to aides.

Whilst Reform could well go one to win the by-election it has not been the walking the park they expected it to be when Burnham was blocked from standing. Goodwin is totally lacking in charisma. The party really doesn't have much to offer other than attacking immigrants. They now have another party outflanking them on the right who could cost them dozens of seats in constituencies where a few thousand votes could mean the difference between winning and losing.

I would love to see Reform miss out by a few hundred votes with Nick Buckley depriving them of the seat by picking up all the extreme right wing vote.

Reform have thrown the kitchen sink at this by-election so if they don't win it will be a serious setback for Farage.

We're at the time of night where the Sky News anchor is describing the demographic make-up of Gorton and Denton as "a strangely frankincense constituency".
