Fixed this for Jez
Don't concede ground to those who sow division and fear.*

*unless it’s that nice Mr Putin. Then it’s OK and you should definitely concede any literal ground he asks for, because you probably provoked him.

Does he think Melenchon isn't divisive?

He's one of Le Pen's trump cards. Not as much as Macron, admittedly, but the latter at least has to govern.

What a dreadful Sunday it has been, chez le BBC. Kuenssberg could barely contain her grief and James Coomarasamy has just spent a full hour explaining to us that Le Pen's defeat is merely a speed-bump in the road to inevitable electoral glory.

There people are not journalists.

I've been dreading the new Starmer government having to negotiate the humane processing of refugees in French Flanders with Le Pen and her Poujardists. Thank Dieu this will now not have to happen.

They certainly are.

It's still incredibly grim. The place I worked for a year, St-Omer, in the Pas de Calais, has an FN representative for the first time.

I see the French markets have risen on the result, which I wasn't sure they would. They must think there's a non-Melenchon coalition out there.

Very amusing fish out of water comedy giving an insight as to how France sees Pas de Calais

Wow, never heard of that. Will check it out.

It was a while ago when I was there and an England colleague asked me what I made of the area. I said it felt quite like England. He was interested by my reply, because he knew I came from Chaltenham and studied in Oxford, which were well off places, whereas by French standards the Pas de Calais wasn't well off (though St Omer was a nicer bit of it).

The FN winning in my old area feels to me like Reform having won in Tewkesbury (Lib Dem gain).

Off to lunch on his first day the main character thinks he’s going for a hearty meal at a bistro but finds himself queueing at the chip van. A shitty place near England and Belgium with weather to match seemed to be the joke.

News is coming in that the spire of Rouen cathedral is on fire.

Like Notre Dame it was undergoing renovation. At the moment the fire seems to be confined to part of the spire, but if it falls that could be catastrophic.

I like Rouen, I'm sad.
