It's this:

They do seem to be absolutely determined to squeeze every last drop of political martyr’s blood out of Charlie Kirk’s murder that they can manage.
And yet, why do I somehow suspect that on a personal, human level, not a single one of them gives a flying fuck that Kirk is dead ?
Been thinking on this recently.
For all the chatter about 'post-truth' etc, I think it's fair to say that most people would agree with the idea that 'someone deserves the truth'. I.e. if they are murdered, it is only just that the truth of their death is found and made clear.
The issue is, of course, people like different truths, selectively.
Worse, they just make up their own. Indeed, to the point of contradicting themselves, on a long-enough timeline. To the point of not honouring the dead, but using them as a useful symbol, hollowed out and instrumentalised.
Enter: mega rallies and Horst Wessel-esque hagiography.
The grifters have been on full-speed-ahead-churn ever since the killing, and their utter contempt for truth is surely an utter contempt for the dead. Trump is the example par excellence: a demonstrably shallow, venal, callous and utterly self-centred man, but contorted into a figure of paternal benevolence. He'd piss on every one of them, kids included, if he needed to.

It's odd, I was raised in a strongly Catholic family and my wife has a strong Church of England background. Neither of us have an ounce of faith between us but, increasingly rare in this day and age, we know the New Testament like the back of our hands. To see this grotesque spectacle in Arizona is just incredible.

This theocratic terrorism has been endemic in Muslim-majority countries for 30-odd years. Iran, Afghanistan, Lebanon - they were all quite "normal" places, and you could book a Magic Bus trip for 29 quid to any of them out of the classifieds in Melody Maker.
Of course, we should not believe that they are any more devout than my cat (which I do not have), but this religious mantra taps in to a collective understanding of what constitutes "homeland", what constitutes an external threat, and what is therefore something sacred and worth defending with every fibre of our being.
Russia is already at point 2.0.

The next big Trump-mandated day of mourning is Kirk's birthday.
Whilst it was in a different year, Kirk had the same birthday as George Floyd.
The GOP must be praying for somebody to start a punch-up.

If a BlueSky account needs you to sign in to view it, it won't display here.

At Charlie Wotsischops’ memorial/funeral , was anybody else struck by his widow incorrectly quoting from the bible :
“Father forgive them, for they not know (sic) what they do” ?
I know, grieving widow and all that, under stress, but the impression I got was one of a rather dim woman tripping herself up trying to appear performatively pious in public.

Meanwhile, American evangelical 'Christians' - the people who are on record whining Jesus was too liberal - have announced that empathy is a sin.
They're the living proof of the old saying "the devil can quote scripture for his own ends."

Should have no problem then with anyone going "LOL Charlie Kirk is ded lulz!"

For all its faults, Bluesky does have its good points, one of which is watching Americans completely fail to understand British politics. Take Matthew Yglesias, who thinks that fracking here is just like it is in America.
Here's Matthew's Wikipedia page.
