There's nothing worse than movements that demand ideological purity. See also people getting their underwear in a twist when a celeb they like gives an opinion that doesn't 100% mirror their own.

That's splitting hairs. It's the Declaration of Independence that marks the birth of America, and no serious historian is going to think the United States really began later.

So, if a country self-identifies as independent then it is, despite still being governed by another country at the time?
