I don't for one minute believe "this only happened because their concerns were ignored".
This happened because it's what they do.
It's wat they did when Suella summoned them to the Cenotaph, when twitter summoned them to Southport and when the same bunch summoned them to Downing street.
They’ve been hitting towns on a Saturday afternoon for two decades. Targeted around a local issue such as a mosque being built or a planning issue about parking expansion for Friday prayer. Hardly remembered in less febrile times and fewer racist talking heads fanning flames.

What pisses me off most about this, other than hateful scumbags just out to use any ‘excuse’ to be racist while egged on by hands-off scumbags like Farage, is the hypocrisy. It’s not for one *second* about kids, because I can guarantee these selfsame arseholes will - if they have kids - happily give them a slap and treat them like shit on the one hand, and on the other also be of the type to be sexualising young girls and lamenting the demise of page 3.

There have been some suggestions that last nights protests/riot was always going to happen because many of Tommy Robinson's band of bigots thought that idle could well have ended up in prison on Monday. As it happens he fled the country on Monday night so they were desperate to find some other excuse to riot.

The Venn diagram showing the overlap of far right activism and noncery is well attested.

At what point can the EDL be proscribed as a terrorist organisation?
I don't think the EDL exist anymore. Southport was organised by Patriotic Alternative, or something like that.
I also thought the EDL folded about 10 ten years ago (when Waxy-Lemon emigrated), however in the last two days I've heard the police, BBC and LBC refer to "EDL rioters".

Indeed, in the days that the EDL used to protest the grooming gangs (Rotherham etc), there was a regular string of EDLer nonce cases going through the courts.

Perhaps it's the same as when the National Front were still being used as shorthand for the Fash when their membership had dwindled to a handful of skinheads and a few elderly Hitler worshippers.

Today they no longer want tough policing.

Lee Anderson was talking the other day about the good work of the cop who stamped on that guy's head at Manchester Airport. Presumably now he's crying over EDL rioters being restrained?
Same old, same old.

Starmer was seething at the press conference as will the police for getting deliberately challenged by a mob while they’re grieving with a community.
Keir mentioned existing legislation used to deal with football hooligans, many of Tommeh’s thugs will be familiar with it. If the long arm of the law reaches them, we will be treated to bogus victimhood and whataboutery from the perpetrators.

He managed to imply some asylum seekers were holed up in a Travelodge and phoned to ‘investigate’ because he’s a big brave boy. Turned out it was international nurses helping cover NHS staff shortages being put up.

There was some time in the 1800s (my knowledge of that era's a bit hazy).
Major wave of unrest until about 100,000 special constables were sworn in.
It's pretty much the constitutional conservative's equivalent to Cable Street.
Outnumbered radical assemblies dispersed seeing they were seriously outnumbered.
Does anybody recall the incident.
Anyhow, we might deputise and equip a few tens of thousands of citizens in places like Glasgow or Liverpool (Then grant the regular cops all their holiday requests).
Alternatively deputise the Gurkha regiment and deploy them to enforce public order.
I'm probably getting far to excited at the prospects of the fash getting a well deserved pasting.

Chartist riots, 1840s.
While much of Europe was exploding in revolutionary fervour, ours fizzled out comparatively peacefully (although in some areas, like South Wales, it was pretty bloody). Maybe there's something in the officers playing cricket with the rank and file after all.

Thanks Andy.
A touch earlier than I imagined.
When it comes to history, I'm more of a Ancient through Reformation, Age of Discovery and 20th Century person.

Troops were sent in against the people of Merthyr Tudful in 1831. This was, supposedly the occasion of the first raising of a red flag by workers.

I work in the NHS and I've just been talking to one of my colleagues who's black and hails from Zimbabwe but has been in the UK for over 20 years and now holds dual citizenship. His kids are born and bred here in the north east and his missus, also from Zimbabwe, also works in the NHS. I asked him about his plans for the weekend. "nothing - our church minister just messaged to advise us to keep a low profile and stay at home due to the anti immigrant demos planned in Sunderland".
