Maybe the clock could do with being turned back 50 years in some areas of society. 50 years ago was a time before Thatcher fucked the country over. Some things were better then.

Public transport
Housing
Political discourse

to name but a few.

Despite being raised to hate the Tories from birth (1964), I do have to resist the temptation towards rose-tinted nostalgia when I think of the post-war consensus.
Ted Heath (for example) did some bad stuff, but compared to all the senior Tories since 1979 he looks reasonable.
All things are relative.
I think we lost something, an element of social cohesion for one, when the wartime generation retired from frontline politics.

The consensus always was that, unlike the Great Unpleasantness, the Continuing Argumentation brought social classes together in such a way as to begin to understand each other and the issues facing society. Thatcher's generation - nah. Not talking to the oiks, too busy 'getting on'.
