As kids they were dragged around museums and stately homes and forced to listen to sweet little old ladies tell tourists how fascinating everything was and don't touch that. What they took from this was that history was dull, but worthy and improving. Later on they learned a little about the history of the UK (well, England) and were entranced by the tales of beautiful queens, great kings, perfidious foreigners, and plucky heroes always beating the odds and delivering great victories by dint of pluck, nerve, know-how, and great British spunk.

Anything complicating that worldview is wrong. For them, "my country, right or wrong" may as well not have those last 2 words. And heaven forbid anyone uses the full quote*. For them, heritage and history are status symbols - ours are better than the neighbours', and anything getting them dirty makes us look bad.
