Crabcakes wrote: Thu Sep 15, 2022 9:52 am Another random thought: bar a sensationally unlikely set of events, no one alive today is likely to hear “god save the Queen” as the national anthem again.
Is it that unlikely? Of course we may find that Sweet Caroline replaces the dirge or a republican revolution occurs but if we stay a Monarchy it would only need something to happen to George.

In terms of the Order of Succession, Charlotte is third in line. Prince William is 40 so even with a long and healthy life that scenario could be only fifty or so years away.
Even without anything unexpected happening to George, he is 9, he is likely to die in less than 90 years. If his eldest child is a girl, there will be people his age or younger who will still be around to see her crowned.

What are the team's plans for tomorrow, then?

There's a wall-to-wall Deathathon on the telly as the final burning of 6,000,000,000 quid becomes a highpoint of the blessed Island's past, present, and future.

Will Elton be doing the music, will mixed-race couples hold hands, will there be special prizes bestowed upon the best mourners?

Personally, I would be tempted to stay in with four cans of Stella and a bumper bag of Monster Munch but I will probably grab a bowl of fish-soup on The Ku'damm adjacent (almost) to my next spinal specialist.

Does anyone really care?

I think for most people, the royals remain just irrelevant.

I have to work, we did have a fun day planned but the University has sensibly toned down all events that day so effectively we are just walking around campus.

Saying that it’s probably one of the only places I’ll be able to get a coffee from a shop.

Quick hop into the south with wife and kids for the occasion of "extra day off all together".

I've got two cans of Amstel and a big bag of Hula Hoops if that helps.

Unless you’re Hitchins The Lesser, and Steven Glover, then it will be pass the tissues!

Glover does have the sunken eyes of the serial Percy punisher, doesn't he?

For me, working on a model medieval village and castle.

They started taking their seats at 8 in the church. Be a bummer if you wanted a fag break, you'd have no chance. Some fella was on his mobile though, checking in on FB maybe. "Feeling sad 😢at Westminster Abbey."

Suggestion heard over the weekend was that her body could be cut into 4 pieces plus the head, and the pieces sent to Belfast, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Douglas, while her head remains in London (somewhere nice and high up for people to see, maybe on a pole). Then everyone gets a go, and no need for a queue.

We intended to watch it; part of history and all that. It's on in the background but there's a lawn that really needs cutting out there.

Tangential thought : I think I have heard the word "unswerving" more times during the last ten days than in the whole duration of my previous existence up to this point.

It's astonishingly quiet today, no traffic, no distant music, no kids playing. It seems that the predictions that the Queen's funeral will break TV viewing figure records may prove correct.

I must admit that today's task - angle grinding the rust off some garden furniture - has been put on hold, so as not to disturb the quiet.

I don't know what stage of the proceedings they are at, but the locals seem to have decided that life can be resumed. Normal Bank Holiday activities have suddenly started up, lawnmowers, blokes with heads in car bonnets, kids emitting Hammer Horror screams, next door playing their music too loud etc etc. Nice whilst it lasted.

I was on the phone to Dad today, he's in London and he commented on how quiet it was.
"Like one of those old cup final days - when people cared about the cup"
was his observation.
