Reminds me of Jeremy Whine on the Higgs Boson and a guy from CERN: "Why aren't you curing cancer instead of wasting money on this?".

Guy from CERN: "One side-product of our research has been the MRI scanner, so, you know, go fuck yourself" (I may be paraphrasing slightly there).

There's another good one where about social class in television. People like her are always going on about "liberal media elite", wouldn't she want to know more about that? The television companies should be funding it, she says. Does she not have some contacts there?

Ha ha. This is the one.

As it happens, the broadcasters are partners in this, so they will be involved. But the point stands.

And another.

Studying medieval history and even the NI troubles is silly elitist old rubbish. So let's study something current and down to earth. Women's football then? Numbers of teams in England have doubled in 10 years. I'd be very interested to know more about it. Apparently, that's wrong too. But at least we get a good joke out of it.

I expect Charlotte thinks she could do this for free in a newspaper column. "Just get off your fat arse and play", that sort of thing.

And another. OK, the title puts me off with jargon, but I'm not the one assessing the grants. The stuff below the line explains it clearly enough for me. It's a terrifying new university discipline called... English. It's very contemporary, but I don't know if this is a plus or a negative for Charlotte.

Another one Charlotte could do in a newspaper column, no doubt. "I love the internet but it's not like reading a book" or something.

Had a lovely walk in the woods today and sat down with a fellow dog walker who recommended her homeopathic vet as mainstream vets are in the pockets of big pharma. Jeezus H you can’t escape these morons.

"Editor in Chief" of Unherd, apparently. Aren't the people resigning "members"? What am I missing? Who is he to say they're "panicking"?

How can you be "Editor-in-Chief" of some poxy blog? It's like being CEO of a sweets shop.

What's a "concocted campaign" anyway?

I wonder if Gorgeous George, the Reclaim bloke with the Nike trainers whose name I've forgotten, Littlejohn, Wootton, Esther common sense McVey, Boris fucking Johnson, Truss, Susan Hall, Amanda Platell et al. will have much to say about this. Here in the north east, our water supplier is owned by a Chinese holding company. It boils my piss that this is going on while tiny minded arseholes are whining about the colour of a tiny embroidered flag on a football shirt and people taking the piss out of the royal family.

Especially when you look like a spotty teen who never did a days' work in his life.

Gill's bravely soldiering on. "Pseudoscience" is an interesting term for medieval English history (the grain trade), recent Northern Irish history (the Troubles), research into war in Uganda and Columbia, Shakespeare, Greek archaeology. And it doesn't even fit the less traditional stuff, like the projects about gay porn and women football coaches. Those are social science, not "pseudoscience".

As zillions of people before me have observed, there's no incentive for her to stop this stuff. I don't buy that "us here, now, we're playing her game, maaan" but the worse she gets, the higher the chance of wingnut welfare.

Academics fucking love their work being talked about, by people who know what the're talking about. What they don't like is misrepresentation and being taken out of context by professional dullards in the media.

Yeah, and in this case with the strong likelihood of getting a load of harrassment.

The bigotry is very noticeable. Say what you like about porn, it's a big thing, in cash and non-cash terms. You don't have to be a "no price on knowledge" fundamentalist to think that knowing about it could be useful. But say "gay porn" and it's ha-ha-ha-ha or worse.

What's also missed is that univerisities are international, and governments fund this stuff across the world. So it's all part of a wider (I hate this word) ecosystem from which we do draw direct benefits.

Anyone else noticed local social media being infiltrated crypto-fash?

We currently have a lot of local helpless anger about a national grid pylon route coming down our valley from the new wind farms in the Cambrian Mountains further north. There seems to be a pattern of new users popping up, pretending to be local despite no one knowing who they are, setting up their own Facebook groups (where local discussion and protest groups already exist) and then gradually injecting poison such as "once the wind farms and pylons have decimated house prices, they're going to move asylum seekers in, I've heard".

Anyone else seeing this in local campaigns against ULEZ ot LTNs or whatever it is your community feels is being imposed on it?

I’ve noticed these sites no longer have angry many gammons responding if you challenge them. The above site has replies in the thousands about the woke England football shirt flag but hardly three figures for most posts.

A really very good article from David Runciman. I'd never have thought of comparing Liz Truss to Brian Clough, but there you go.

Swapping of the Guards: UK and France celebrate friendship

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-europe-68762452
Troops swapped places in Paris and London on Monday to mark 120 years since the Entente Cordiale was signed.

British troops from Number 7 Company, the Coldstream Guards, took part in a changing of the guard ceremony at the Élysée Palace, while members of French Republican Guard did the same at Buckingham Palace.
