As a 10 year old it felt odd to see Confederate flag flying by C&W clubs at fetes and such like. See also CB Radio fans painting their Cortinas in Dukes of Hazzard colours. There was a lot of American Civil war Westerns and of course Roots on TV. So you knew the Rebs were the baddies. I recall a bemused Lynard Skynard getting both barrels from someone for the flag on his jacket.

Incidentally, the guy in the first tweet, Jeff Timmer, is an interesting character who is well worth a follow on Twitter. A former leader of the Michigan Republican Party who became a Never Trumper and is now leading recall efforts against his former colleagues wherever they are found to be supporting plans to change voting laws on party lines:

It seems the far left have suffered a Corbyn-style meltdown in the race to become the Democratic Party candidate for Ohio's 11th congressional district, which has a special election in November. Their preferred candidate, Nina Turner, blew a fifty point lead to end up second behind centrist figure (and Hillary-endorsed) Shontel Brown.

It transpired that Turner spent the 2016 election campaigning for the Green Party in Pennsylvania, and spent recent weeks criticising the likes of Biden and popular Dem House leader Jim Clyburn. Turner has also been outspoken in her criticism of Israel, even though OH11 has a large Jewish population. In her concession speech, Turner stated "We didn't lose this race, evil money manipulated and maligned this election".

Or to put it another way: the far-left backed an awful candidate who blew a massive lead and ended up blaming others for the defeat. Sound at all familiar?

I saw one of her ads which implied that her opponent Shontel Brown was going to prison. Here's a good analysis of what went wrong for Nina Turner.

One assumes this is American SWP-speak for "It was the Jews wot dun it".

Any fule kno the Jews are all evil, rich, manipulative anti-democracy types. Or, at least that what the UK Corbynites will tell you. Can't see the Yank version being much different.

Going back to the subject of Rudy Giuliani and his precipitous fall from grace, an interesting new article from Vanity Fair:
How Rudy Giuliani Went From 9/11’s Hallowed Mayor to 2021’s Haunted Ghoul
Bill Bratton, Joe Klein, and former friends and aides weigh in on the colossal collapse of NYC’s ex-mayor

Giuliani was always overrated. Politicized falls in crime that were happening in cities all over America. The mayor before him (David Dinkins) had to cope with the peak of the crack epidemic and murders started falling under him. He also massively expanded police numbers, all before Giuliani came in.

What is it about Dinkins that might have made people think he was failing on crime?

Yes I'd say Dinkins was very unlucky in that regards. It should be noted that the Democratic nominee for New York mayor is Eric Adams an African-American ex-police officer.
