Reminds me of a thing Stephen Fry wrote, about how education should be about fostering a love of discovery and learning, rather than hitting arbitrary targets. All well and good, but being able to ace it on QI isn't quite as important as knowing your way around MS Office.

And it's not like everybody at university now is studying Latin either.

Before the full facts emerge best giving that one a swerve, Andy. Slow down before you do it.

Burnham has very good and extremely bad days. Like Clive Lewis.

Even on his better days he's a gob on a stick.

He's one of the best at presentation but his judgement is poor. See him taking on eg the editor of Rail Magazine on railways.

Under Corbyn, Andy was the ultimate party foot soldier who loyally serves whoever the members democratically elected. But I suppose he’s speaking for Manchester to explain his sniping at Starmer.

He was so loyal he decided to get out of Leigh and Parliament to become Manchester Mayor?

Professional northerner reckons cricket is better up north, but Nottingham doesn't count...

Headingley = North.
Trent Bridge = (East) Midlands.

Can't comment on specialness of the North compared with eg The Oval, but he's got a point here. Southampton over Old Trafford/ Headingley looks wrong, not just in terms of simple geography but in terms of big cricket areas.

I know you're a shandy-swilling softy Southron to whom nearly the whole country is North ;) , but officially Doddighab* is in the East Midlands.

Yes.
Snottinga's Ham...

I believe it to be in the Danelaw, therefore North. At least until 918CE, which is pretty recent for a medievalist.

So was a good chunk of Essex...

By that logic, Chelmsford's north and Carlisle's south.
