Barry Legg is a blast from the past. One of the 1992 Tory intake, supporter of flat tax and abolishing child benefit. Booted out of Milton Keynes South West on a 14.6% swing in 1997. Brought back by IDS as his chief of staff, MPs and the men in grey suits weren't impressed.

There was another fringe meeting that had a statue of Thatcher, the rebuild of the Tory Party will require a distancing of themselves from Thatcher, it’s getting more toxic as the years pass.

Sunak had to get rid of the "moron premium", hence Rees-Mogg couldn't stay in an economic portfolio. I suppose we're lucky he didn't get let loose on Culture or something.

From Popbitch:

Schoolboy pranks can often be cruel. Schoolboy pranks at Eton, especially so. But we heard of one this week that seemed not only victimless, but actively fun for all involved.

Classmates who attended Eton with Jacob Rees-Mogg had a longstanding prank they liked to play on him over the years they were there. Someone would start singing or whistling the National Anthem whenever he was in earshot, then watch as young Jacob would stop whatever he was doing to proudly stand for it.

Never got boring, apparently.

That’s cosplay Mogg, the real Jacob gets up for Champagne by Sailor and ABBA’s Money.

You have to wonder how much of it is his own bizarre act, like ‘Boris’ isn’t a real person. It’s almost like sending certain people to a certain boarding school programmes them for life to create a public charade.

Could I refer you to 'The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life' by Erving Goffman.

We all present a construct to others, but some speak of a very deep insecurity and needs to dupe to gain our ends.
Wikipedia wrote:Presentation of Self

Goffman's The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life was published in 1956, with a revised edition in 1959.[15] He had developed the book's core ideas from his doctoral dissertation. It was Goffman's first and most famous book, for which he received the American Sociological Association's 1961 MacIver Award.

Goffman describes the theatrical performances that occur in face-to-face interactions. He holds that when someone comes in contact with another person, he attempts to control or guide the impression the other person will form of him, by altering his own setting, appearance and manner. At the same time, the second person attempts to form an impression of, and obtain information about, the first person. Goffman also believes that participants in social interactions engage in certain practices to avoid embarrassing themselves or others. Society is not homogeneous; we must act differently in different settings. This recognition led Goffman to his dramaturgical analysis. He saw a connection between the kinds of "acts" that people put on in their daily lives and theatrical performances. In a social interaction, as in a theatrical performance, there is an onstage area where actors (people) appear before the audience; this is where positive self-concepts and desired impressions are offered. But there is also a backstage—a hidden, private area where people can be themselves and drop their societal roles and identities.

IIRC Mogg comes from fairly humble roots on one of his lines of ancestry. Not that far back either. What are the chances he's never forgotten that?

Alan Clarke would have observed that the Rees-Moggs overcompensate because they buy their own furniture.
