Rail fares in England are to be frozen next year for the first time in 30 years, the government has announced.

The freeze until March 2027 will apply to regulated fares, which includes season tickets and off-peak returns.

The most recent fare rise, in March 2025, was 4.6%. Rail fares traditionally have gone up in January, based on the July rate of the retail price index (RPI) + 1% - although this formula has not always been followed.

The announcement comes days before the chancellor sets out the government's financial plans in the Budget on Wednesday, with Rachel Reeves indicating that cutting the cost of living will be a key focus.

However, at the same time the chancellor is also widely expected to increase taxes to help fill a multibillion-pound gap in her spending plans.

Stephen Bush isn't as clever as he thinks he is. Assume he's talking about tax. Unless he knows something we don't, the promise not to raise employee NI, income tax, VAT and Corporation Tax rates is still holding. Never mind all the other stuff that is being delivered.

Now, sure, you can say the way they've got round that has been suboptimal on eg employers' NI, and freezing thresholds. But that's not the same thing as saying it was undeliverable and fell apart immediately. And it's not like they're the first government to do this stuff. I get why they hate the illiberalism of the government, but there's something more in the hostility towards this government from the (non rabid right) media. Like they hate them for not being as clever as them or something.

These tax rises this year seem to have come from the OBR having given Hunt the benefit of the doubt on productivity, but no Reeves. Or does Bush think they've come about because Reeves structured some tax rises wrong?

Be interesting to see the budgeting for this. Do they see the new structure saving money? Probably a bit early for that, though it would be nice if they could show some improvement like this. Or is it paid for by less investment? Which would be less positive.

I'm not sure why either. I don't remember Bush being as vitrolic about Johnson for instance.

Advice for the Government from David Cameron's sister in law. Don't do any policies that help people, unless they're destitute (and I'm not sure about her commitment then). She argues this is why taxes on families are going up. It's a redistribution from people like me with no kids to people who have kids. And I'm pretty cool with that.

They're just annoyed they can't moan about all the benefits going to "scroungers". Isn't the point that even if you just want a bit of time to yourself in the morning, breakfast clubs are for you as well?
