The point is the overall universities budget. At present, lots of European students are paying higher rates. If they start paying lower rates, then there's a hole in the budget. Perhaps that can be filled with extra overseas students or something, but I can see why the Government might be demurring on this point.

When I was teaching in FE and HE the breakeven point for a tutor group was 15 UK students. If a couple of the 15 were overseas students we could run with 10 and some cohorts were as small as 5 or 6.

Over a year ago I presented solutions, long worked on by brilliant civil servants that would end the ability for children in the UK to take naked images of themselves. 91% of online child sex abuse is self-generated by children groomed, tricked and exploited in to abuse. The technology exists to stop children being able to take naked images of themselves. We could make this possible on every phone and device in the country. We could stop this abuse. It has taken me a year to get you to agree to even threaten to legislate in this space. Not legislate, just threaten. This is the definition of incremental change. Nothing bold about it. The announcement was meant to be in March, I’m still on a promise this will happen in June, I’ve given up believing it. How many children were left without a safety net in the time we dilly dallied and worried about tech bosses?

Are other countries actually doing this? Would it actually work? Or has it been blocked by "tech bosses" everywhere else?

The Government has been legislating plenty. This strikes me as a case of someone thinking their own thing is the most important, and decks should be cleared.

Starmer got it more in the neck for trying to bring in a Hillsborough Law with an exemption that wouldn't have affected Hillsborough victims than all the previous governments who didn't bring any such law in.

Am told a letter is circulating among backbench Labour MPs saying that now is not the time for a leadership election - apparently has been signed by over 100 MPs.

Hmm, maybe he isn't finished quite yet.

Worth recalling that one of the main achievements of (if not the Government) this Labour-majority Parliament, and one very popular with the voters, was the End of Life Bill. This was blocked by what can only be called filibustering in the House of Lords.

It's easy to say this is Starmer's fault for not abolishing the Lords or whatever, but a Lord's elected mid term might equally have blocked it.

It's not like the overall agenda isn't proceeding anyway. But saying you've got a law passed sounds more impressive than that you've eg made a change to teacher training that will mean that VAWG gets dealt with better in classrooms up and down the country.

There does seem a lot of angry members around and after all they decide the next leader especially as unlike a reasonable transfer of power which could have been better argued after another bruising council election and with Burnham a year left in his position.

I do think the hard work hasn’t been done, and frankly anyone taking over now would face a half finished job. I think Labour may have been slow but it was always outlined by Starmer as the case.

Now what this government can achieve won’t achieve and I’m not sure any of the names announced can change that.

As for Burnham,

He has to find a seat.

Fight that seat (without a leader probably) and with Greens or Reform putting everything into it and a Labour membership who aren’t all on board.

Win that seat.

Fight a leadership election (because no one is anointing him not with the actions he has undertaken).

Hope it hasn’t started and if it has he’s allowed on the ballot and if he is, win that seat, because he could easily become leader but can’t become PM (Are we risking this?).

And once he’s hurdled all that, he faces a first big test which is the Mayoral election with the changes about PR not fully implemented. Imagine he then lost that?

Sounds like Burnham may have found a seat. Perhaps the plotters had more of an idea than I thought.

My guess is that the Greens won’t fight too hard.

Also depends on the seat and who knows what the Greens will do. And how hatchet it will look.

They could have done that on the sly until they had an agreement. Instead all the factions have had a say with their amazing plans which probably don’t work in reality (I’ve read enough decent Fabian Society pamphlets).

Good luck reuniting the party, I wouldn’t vote for him and he faces a challenge no doubt.
