Perception among many in Sweden is that it all went to shit after Syrian refugees were admitted. But the murder rate (which I always take as the best indicator of violent crime) doesn't really bear that out. Refugees, as I understand it, surged in 2015. That's the year that the murder rate started rising, but it's surely too soon for the Syrians to have had that big an effect. Since then, it's not changed very much at all. Though doubtless the Sweden Democrats have done very well out of Syrian refugees.

Well, we've got a few more years of data now. The Syrian refugees must surely have turned Sweden into Detroit by now, right? Um, no. Perhaps an outlier, but murder rate now lower than all but one year since 1969.

Where's that Peter Sweden guy? Maybe he's moved to the US where he's doing a tour of the states with worse murder rates. Which is all of them. Even Maine, with the oldest US population, and being very rural has a murder rate over twice as high.

Election results coming in. The exit poll was very promising. Unfortunately Sweden doesn't seem to be very good at exit polls.

The (left-centre) opposition are now 3 seats up, but still lots of votes to be counted.

The Sweden Democrats did worse than expected. The Swedish Tories have done some pretty hard nosed stuff on immigration and look like they've lost power, but in terms of keeping the far right out of power, it may have worked. I think there's been too much commentary that just sees Kipper voters as an insatiable block.

Swedish PM Kristersson resigns after election loss

Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has resigned after his ruling right-wing bloc was narrowly defeated by the centre-left opposition in the country's general election.

He made the announcement in a post on X on Thursday afternoon, after preliminary votes from Sunday's election showed about 50,000 votes separated the two blocs in the country of about 10 million people.

Opposition parties led by Magdalena Andersson of the Social Democrats look set to win 176 seats in the 349-seat Riksdag, Sweden's parliament.

Kristersson, a conservative, had been supported in government by the anti-immigration hard-right Sweden Democrats (SD), and had promised them cabinet jobs if he won the election.

His right-wing bloc looks set to win 173 seats in the Riksdag, according to data from the Swedish Election Authority.

The results will be subject to formal certification in the coming days and are expected to finalised this weekend.
