He doesn't like music either or any cultural hinterlands. Does he experience pleasure beyond golf and winding people up to hate Johnny Foreigner?
So that explains why the only BBC programme he has NOT been on, is Desert Island Discs

It's classic Thatcherism - dislike anything you don't understand and don't understand anything that doesn't make money.

The former part sounds like my ex-motor mechanic mate and his attitude to modern vehicle technologies (even diesel) - his politics are more Reform though.

If that was a US radio programme it would be a breeze for Nigel. Just choose some Toby Keith, John Mellencamp, Kid Rock or some Nashville good ol boys and shout 'yo, meruca' after every record.
Nige would need a savvy PR person to carefully select his R4 DIDs.

It's the crab-in-bucket mentality + the kid at the back of the class. 'Wuah, what's the point ey'.

Motherfucker, let other people do it and focus on your engines. There's enough space for everyone. This is one form of breathtaking arrogance - the casual, prejudiced dismissal of entire areas of human meaning and activity - that somehow never gets called out. It's absolutely incredible in how rude, entitled and arrogant it is.

I don’t think John Mellencamp falls into that company

Desert Island Discs would be a nightmare for him. Songs aside, an extended and quite probing interview with a nostalgia who will keep the political slogans out of it. He'd have to be himself. He'd hate that.

That was unfair of me although John's anthemic Americana has wide appeal.

Yeah, Johnny Cougar as he was when I saw him supporting someone, somewhere about a century ago, is one of the good guys.

He rarely tours Europe but remember his last big London gig was the day after Major's election victory. Cheered up a really terrible day.
