A thing I've noticed an increase of a lot from supporters of both is the prelude "I'm not racist" usually in relation to immigrants, boats and flags. If you say those words then you are. For example, if the issue of shoplifting arises in conversation, or an item on the news asks opinions from people in the street, do non-shoplifters regularly say "I'm not a shoplifter"? If you don't shoplift then it wouldn't cross your mind.
