Whilst I understand why Sunak wanted to bring her back to appease the ERG I don't understand why he put her back in the Home Office. If he had her Environment Secretary or Business Secretary there probably would not have been such a backlash.

My guess is that she was told from an early age that she was brilliant and destined for great things. While by no means thick, this gave her an arrogance that led to a harsh dose of reality when she was passed by people who put in the hard hours. Rather than doubling her efforts, she saw it as everyone else not recognising her genius, and developed a very bitter streak and nasty attitude towards anyone she thought was getting for free what she was entitled to.

She also understood that as a woman of colour in the Tory party, she has to be perceived as "tough" if she wants to be taken seriously.

PS I guess the ERG demanded one of the great offices. Although the thought of Leaky Sue spending the next 2 years in wellies doing photo ops in the rain and mud at nature reserves may have crossed Sunak's mind and prompted an emperor-style chuckle.
