I wonder which monarch had the happiest care free reign, Edward VII sounds a good candidate. A constitutional monarch with no mass media to bother him, he ate, drank, hunted, shagged and watched sport a lot.

All this carry on about being sent happy and glorious doesn't seem to be going too well.

I'd be tempted to chuck the whole thing as long as I could keep the oatcake business. And the hat, of course. The hat would be a hard red-line.

Edward VIII didn't have it too bad. All the drinking and shagging, finally got the job, said "Stuff this for a game of soldiers" first chance he got and shot off somewhere warm.

Joe Average could only dream of a life in a French chateau with a guaranteed generous dole cheque every year but he cut a sad figure. Who backed the wrong horse and should have been grateful he wasn't shot for treason.
Don't know much about his daily life from 1945 until his death but guess it wasn't too hard. Was he a minor French celeb opening supermarkets wearing a plastic crown?

He'd sold Balmoral and Sandringham to George VI in return for a yearly allowance and still lived with some style. There were overseas trips and he was generally received well by the great and the good.

That's effectively what the subservient submissive Royalists sing, and woe betide anyone who boos it. Too early in the day to think how utterly crazy it is that in 2026 there is even a Royal family who have untold wealth, privileges and sycophants who literally bow to them.

Explaining to the St George flag shaggers that England needs a national anthem because it doesn't have one like Scotland and Wales is hard work but worth pursuing.

Yes, he did, but not on the grounds of any sort of critique of the innate inequality or unearned privilege of the monarchy. Billy’s (correct) view was that “God Save the Queen” is just a dismal tune.

In the I this weekend, Jennie Bond has a column talking about how the Royal Family is going to be on a charm offensive this year, to banish memories of Prince Diddler of Kiddyfiddler. She talks at length about the recent documentary "What is the RF for?", and highlights their views and work on ecology and sustainability.

All well and good, but not really much of a mission statement. Especially when that's at odds with their conspicuous consumption. Seems to me that if they have a purpose, it's on a level with football team mascots.

Dimbleby’s documentary series was (unexpectedly) brilliant, and scathing. The answer to the rhetorical question its title proposes has to be, for anyone that watches it, “Fuck knows”.

I recommend catching it on the Iplayer.

Hard to see how any sort of charm offensive could banish the memory of Andy the kiddy fiddler.
