There are now two leading candidates for the American presidency.

One of them is a 77 year-old racist, misogynist bigot who has been found liable for rape, who incited a deadly, violent insurrection aimed at overturning a democratic election, who has committed mass fraud for personal enrichment, who is facing 91 separate counts of felony criminal charges against him, and who has overtly discussed his authoritarian strategies for governing if he returns to power.

Voters know all this about Trump.

Kevin McCarthy may be in trouble. Democrats not going to help him see of a confidence vote put up by his own even loonier colleagues. But I expect those loonies will make sure enough of them vote for McCarthy.

10 Republicans so far have voted not to stop the vote on McCarthy going ahead. That's more than enough for the motion to fail.

Barring some of those 10 changing their minds on the vote itself (which is not impossible), then he's toast.

They know about this to a point, the problem is the way the American press creates a false equivalence between that and Biden's age.

McCarthy lost that vote by 218-208, with 11 rebels. Apparently there's now a debate before the vote on kicking McCarthy out, between two lots of Republicans.

I think I'll skip that.

Even in this country you'll hear plenty of people go on about "Sleepy Joe".

As Republicans debate his fate on the House floor, NBC News reports that Kevin McCarthy’s office has reached out to some moderate Democrats to ask them to vote to keep him as speaker.

There is no indication they are willing to oblige:
McCarthy thinks he's lost.

I think McCarthy's lost too.

But it's excrutiating. They vote by calling out yes or no. Like a teacher doing a register in 1979, except with 435 in the class.

The thing with soap operas is that they look ridiculous if there are too many dramas. You can't have a plane crashing in Emmerdale every week. McCarthy actually got the support of some of the most notorious piss abouters and still lost.

McCarthy couldn't nominate any other sort without the even loonier ones kicking off again.

Quite useful to have this guy in the public eye. For Democrats.

A thought about taxation in the USA . The IRS has so many loopholes, so many (to us) ridiculous ways of legally avoiding paying tax, that to actually get done for tax evasion is quite bizarre. Especially when the penalties for doing so will hurt far more than just paying the minimum amount of tax that you can legally get away with. Says a lot about Trump, don't it
