For the first time in my life I fear so.

All the same, I hope we have a Stanislav Petrov somewhere in the chain of command.

You wonder if he has already tried a few times and then forgot and moved on to something else.

Trump has now (of course) withdrawn (or "postponed" for 5 days) his threat to attack Iranian power plants. TACO, again.

He claims this is as a result of negotiations with the Iranians.
The Iranians have just released a statement that they have had no contact with the US government.
Take your pick.
There's a (so far unsubstantiated) rumour that Starmer talked him down.

Seeing how so much of what Trump says is total bullshit I'm assuming that the truthful statement is the one from Tehran.

I'm assuming nothing, the Iranian regime is no better than the USA's.

Whilst a pox shall be put upon both their houses, I'd be inclined ATM to believe the Iranian government for now, given that Tr*mp has come out with gibberish as to being questioned whom exactly they're talking to. He also came out with this gem earlier...
"Look at the way Iran attacked unexpectedly all of those countries surrounding them. That was not supposed to-- nobody was even thinking about it."
...he makes Dubya look like a heavyweight in the world political arena.

In saying all that, he is playing the markets - and it's surely no coincidence that he's given Iran until the end of this week to "do something or else"

Colour me surprised.
Oil traders bet millions minutes before Trump's Iran talks post
Market data reviewed by the BBC shows the volume of trade spiked around fifteen minutes before a social media post by the president announcing the move.
The price of oil fell sharply after the announcement, dropping 14% in a matter of minutes. Traders who bet on the unexpected move would have made money.
Some market analysts say the unusual activity opens up the possibility that the bets may have been placed with prior knowledge of the decision.

Leaving aside Israel, who are attacking Iran for their own historical reasons, plus in no small part to Netanyahu being a warmongering cunt, this conflict is really just Trump on his own playing war, and he's not very good at it either. Is there no chance at all of the military just disobeying him, and when he sacks the chiefs, then the people who enforce those sackings in turn could just disobey that order.
Sackings in any workplace are enforced by a chain of mutual agreement, which are easy in a private company when an owner can physically stop the firm's bank from paying that person. But for example, in a government job at a local council, a megalomaniac, much despised department manager could sack an employee to the disagreement of even his peers, but with a bit of solidarity, especially from Payroll staff, it's possible for that sacking to not be enforced. That could be done here. Like with those executive orders he signed, they mean nothing without staff who comply. He's just a person who can be disobeyed effectively with solidarity.
Why are Americans collectively such pussycats who are scared of confronting him? EG He speaks to some reporters like shit and they never answer back. It's not like they haven't had 6 years of his presidency to prepare a devastating retort. They're like school kids scared of some disciplinarian 1950s schoolmaster.

The GOP have invented yet another shiny thing for the tangerine toddler in the White House to be the first recipient of.
It feels as though even North Korea would be embarrassed by this point.

I'd say its less meaningful, at least that dad means something to someone. these sycophants are doing it to stay on the payroll, it's not explained what happens when he dies mind. Do we get a Kruschev type denouncing of Stalin?

Mike Johnson is in Congress so not even on Trump's payroll. A more massive wankstain on humanity you couldn't hope to meet.
