The geology is completely different. The low-hanging fruit that the US has exploited simply don't exist in the UK. That's why the experiments in Lancashire, where drilling had to venture much deeper and into unfamiliar strata caused issues.

They don't care, they don't care, they don't care.

I don't know what the non-insane side of the US is doing about this, but it better be fucking clever.

Kids with tough paper rounds - as we say in these parts.

Let's tell it like it is.
Whether Jenrick's tories over here, or the Cartman-Geobbels axis over there.
Our former constitutional "centre right" are now in thrall to 1930s autocracy.

Lots of them are doing stuff, but it doesn't always look like it because the US doesn't really have an "Opposition" in the way we do. Trump was unusual being able to do that from 2020-24, and even lots of Republicans thought that was less than ideal till near the election. The nearest they have to LOTO is the House and Senate Minority Leaders who are fairly underwhelming in themselves, but even they have got the Republicans where they want them on the Budget, with no obvious way out. They can break the filibuster and pass the budget, but the question will then be why they didn't do that before, and even then the Budget will have lots of unpopular stuff in it.

Otherwise, it's mostly people in states doing what they think works best for them in their states, and beyond (where they have a national profile, which is fairly rare). Of those who do, JB Pritzker, the Governor of Illinois and Tim Waltz, the Governor of Minnesota, are good, hard hitting politicians who might do a job in 2028.

Another one of Trump's "good people"

A man pardoned by US President Donald Trump for his role in the 2021 Capitol riot has been charged with threatening to kill the top Democrat in the House of Representatives.

Christopher Moynihan, 34, was arrested in the town of Clinton, New York, for making a terroristic threat to kill a member of Congress, New York State Police said. He has pleaded not guilty.

Moynihan allegedly planned to target House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries during a speech to the Economic Club of New York scheduled for this week, according to court filings obtained by the BBC's US partner CBS News...

Andrew Cuomo accidentally explaining why he's Trump's preferred choice for NYC mayor. Mamdami may well be a populist windbag but Cuomo is a terrible candidate. Here he makes predictions as to how Trump will send in tanks if Mamdami wins. Perhaps but why won't he if Cuomo wins?

Pretty wild story from the state of Maine.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdxrqpl9elno
A Democratic candidate for the US Senate in Maine has apologised and removed a tattoo on his chest resembling a Nazi symbol that sparked backlash.

Graham Platner, a 41-year-old Marine Corps combat veteran and oyster farmer, said he only realised the skull-and-crossbones tattoo resembled Nazi imagery after hearing from "reporters and DC insiders".

The tattoo was visible in a video posted on social media showing Platner dancing in his underwear at his brother's wedding.

"I absolutely would not have gone through life having this on my chest if I knew that – and to insinuate that I did is disgusting," Platner said in a statement to the BBC. "I already had the tattoo covered with a new design."

The tattoo appears to resemble the Totenkopf - German for "death's head". The skull-and-crossbones symbol was used by Nazi forces during World War Two, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

He's not the only one. Here's a thread on Platner that shows he didn't exactly come from nowhere.

An excerpt from the extended whinge that launches teh declarton of independence.
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
Trump does them all.

Unprecedented huge victory for the Democrat candidate in the Virginia governorship race. Perhaps the defeated Republican has some insights on why Kamala Harris lost so badly.
