I drove across Norfolk from near Yarmouth and didn't spot any flag shagger activity in the towns I went through. Deep Tory but maybe not deeply Reform outside Yarmouth. How much of this campaign is very well financed and organised astroturfing?
Quite a bit, I would imagine. I know that every time an organiser is interviewed, racism doesn't take much scratching to surface.
I have politely and with genuine interest asked supporters what this flag panto is in aid of but haven't had an answer yet. I know why people marching in Glasgow or Cardiff on a Saturday afternoon are flag waving, they wish their countries to become sovereign states.
Billy Bragg asked this on Newsnight because all he heard supporters say 'we're not racist.' Bragg noted St George's flags were being waved everywhere during for the women's European cup winners. But no one felt they had to say 'we're not racist.'

An acquaintance (a fellow dog walker I regularly bump into in the park) told of a conversation she had about her neighbour's new flag.
In summary it went something like:
"What's the flag for?"
"To show I'm a patriot, all patriots fly flags"
"I see. What's changed to make you become a patriot?"
"What do you mean, I've always been a patriot?"
"But last week you had no flag."
"I know what you're trying to do but I'm not a racist"

A bit of a “thinking aloud” question; if someone gets hit by a car whilst use a St George pedestrian crossing, can the driver claim they shouldn’t be crossing there as it’s not in the correct road marking format

"I'm not racist but it's a bus full of wogs." That has to be actionable, surely.

Pontllanfraith, you absolute legends.
I defy anyone to say the phrase "Flags, is it?" without having to adopt a Valleys accent. Magnificent.

I remembered something this evening - a few years ago there were Loyalist protests over, I think, the union flag either flying or not flying over Belfast City Hall. One commentator made the point that "Their dominance has gone, their influence is lessening. They know history is against them. All they've got left is the flag ."
Spot the similarity.

It's a pity the English flag is just a red cross on a white background. It's so simple even morons can reproduce it.
I wish the media would stop calling this shit "flags". Doing so gives it a legitimacy it doesn't deserve. It's red paint splattered where it shouldn't be. That's vandalism, nothing more. Or littering, in the case of the Westbury White Horse.

That’s great. Makes a change from banners congratulating people on getting married, which is a South Wales specialty. And I’d rather have the scruffiest banner than an England flag.

At the National Eisteddfod up in Wrexham I saw a lad from Ceredigion do a whole stand-up routine about how social media in his remote community is conducted via the medium of messages painted on bedsheets and hung from road signs.

The common (chav baiting) trope was "Happy 30th birthday Granny"

Or on the pedestrian guard rails next to schools and roundabouts.

I do wonder if I was the last person in the country to connect the flags appearing just before last Saturday's happenings.

"So in an almost Gestapo-like operation last night... the majority of our flags were taken down and despite my pleas they refused to give them back," Mr Crotty said on Facebook.
