Jobcentres didn't have long queues of people trying to get in, even in 1979. Likewise, when you save work on your computer, it's unlikely you use a floppy disk.

Images convey messages, and have heft.

I think this is fair enough. Spending the contingency on (as far as I can tell) nothing which couldn't have been foreseen is like raiding a piggy bank. You need to restock the contingency, hence tax rises and extra borrowing which are likely coming in the budget.

This isn't to me like the bad, more general household budget analogies you get. I think reducing the current deficit is something the government very much should be doing (though not with the benefit cuts apparently coming).

A suitable alternative to the smashed piggy bank would be Sunak in a mask and stripey jersey with a swag bag full of cash. These ads aren't aimed at Stephanie Flanders.

You don't like it and find it hackneyed. It's not an accurate analogy. But it is a good visual shorthand way of getting the message they want across.

Again, what would be a better visual metaphor?

Given that the analogy in question is generally employed in the service of ‘We’re going to cut some aspect of state provision to pieces’ - and severely frayed pieces at that these days - I’m a tad suspicious of it being used at all.
