Two words: fucking nutters.
Her nearest rival Robert Jenrick, now shadow justice secretary, argued his party would "die' unless it left the ECHR.
Good. I'll send it some weeds for its grave, along with an incontinent dog.

Nice of Chris Mason to fail to mention Northern Ireland there.

Not very long to compile an extensive report on a serious subject. Or is it a party hack commissioned to deliver conclusions Badenoch wishes to hear?
Badenoch is expected to appoint Tory peer and former justice minister Lord Wolfson of Tredegar to chair the commission, which is expected to report by autumn, when the party meets for its annual conference.

David Wolfson, Baron Wolfson of Tredegar KC (born 19 July 1968) is a British politician, barrister and life peer who has been Shadow Attorney General since November 2024.[1] He was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Justice from December 2020 to April 2022, when he resigned from the post after Prime Minister Boris Johnson and others were found to have broken COVID-related laws by attending parties.

Reporting at the time of the conference. That might be a sign of what Kemi expects. She’s not going to want something nuanced that backs a longstanding bipartisan position.

More master media performance here, as Kemi takes a swing at the not exactly terrifying Chris Mason and misses.
She should have said "Liz is so irrelevant, doesn't matter if she's a member or not. I lead the party now".

More evidence of her open-mindedness on the ECHR today as she gives a speech saying how it goes against "common sense". Whatever the review says, I think the chances of Kemi standing up at conference and saying "Can I shock you? It's actually all ok!" are pretty remote.
Cameron back in the day made a fuss about EU competencies. These were reviewed (presumably under Hague) and it turned out they were actually OK.

In her speech she also implied that she had coined the term 'lawfare', the term was actually first used in 2001.
When will the Tories accept that they frequently fell foul of the ECHR because they often rushed through laws without proper scrutiny. If laws had been properly debated and amended there would be less scope for the ECHR to become involved in cases.

From the Commons Library.
According to the Court’s statistics, there have been 563 judgments concerning the UK up to the end of 2021. Of these, over half (327) found at least one violation of the European Convention on Human Rights, and about a quarter (144) found no violation.
The difference is that those Governments were led by adults who could cope with it, not Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick.

I first heard it being used in the US.
She's very much in the Johnson mould, isn't she?

This is from an email that Badenoch sent to supporters this evening entitled 'Britain is being mugged'
Dear Friend,
This morning I set out a major Conservative plan to take on the lawfare that’s undermining our country. We’ve become a nation that:
Can’t deport foreign rapists and criminals
Drags our war heroes through courts into old age
Lets activists block vital infrastructure
Allows illegal immigrants to jump the queue for housing and the NHS
Human rights laws and foreign treaties, like the ECHR, are being exploited by activist lawyers to undermine our country.
THAT MUST END.
We need to rewrite the rules of the game with a clear, credible plan.
Is there any evidence to back up the claim immigrants are jumping queues? As we keep being told many immigrants are fit young men. Which is probably the group that rarely use the NHS.
I assume her reference to war heroes is regarding the prosecution of soldiers involved in the Bloody Monday killings. These cases should have been dealt with years ago and have little to do with the ECHR.
