Actually seems like lots of the work is going ahead but the main justification for it, proving the right to work, isn't going to require digital ID.
I see my faves are on the scene.
Lisa Smart, the Liberal Democrats’ Cabinet Office spokesperson, said: “No 10 must be bulk ordering motion sickness tablets at this rate to cope with all their U-turns.
“It was clear right from the start this was a proposal doomed to failure, that would have cost obscene amounts of taxpayers money to deliver absolutely nothing.
“The government now needs to confirm that the billions of pounds earmarked for their mandatory digital ID scheme will be spent on the NHS and frontline policing instead.”
That wasn't clear right from the start, seeing they've made it work in plenty of other countries (aren't the Lib Dems supposed to be Europeans?). Did Estonians, who are very happy with their system, kick off with juvenile bollocks about "frontline policing"? Or do they understand the concept of investment there, perhaps?
Obviously, opposition parties are going to have a pop, but this rubbish from self-appointed grown up parties is incredibly depressing. This is the thinking that's left us with shit NHS IT (despite the Blair scheme having covered its costs, per the NAO). Easier to have a pop about taking money away from bobbies on the beat. And the "everything's shit, the government is much worse than they actually are" is going to benefit Reform more than the Lib Dems, one might think.
