He warned about Putin and his oligarchs in the same way as he brokered peace in Northern Ireland.

If he was so aware of the threat from Russia why was he never off the English -language Russian state TV channel?

His supporters can't even lie convincingly, and think our memory-span is somewhat shorter than that of the average goldfish.

Corbyn will have used his platform on Russia Today to make this point then, I assume. No?

On balance, I don't think this warning gets him off the hook for wanting to leave Eastern Europe to Putin.

Mostly because it consisted of suggesting that we should send a sample of the Novichok to Vlad and asking him to check whether it was some of his stuff.

Thank Dawkins that Abbott’s political career must surely be nearly over.

He's right about the double standards of Johnson being a fucking clown on this stuff, but Corbyn's geopolitical thinking has only ever stretched as far as 'Moscow good, Washington bad'. It's that stupidly simple.

Peter Oborne seems to have some strange bond with Corbyn. Sure, they agree on some Middle East stuff, but surely Oborne is the opposite on European security?

Corbyn certainly did criticize Putin when others were being nice to him. But that makes Corbyn's NATO stuff even more eccentric. "This terrible man is in charge of Russia. Let's disband NATO and let that guy put the Soviet Empire back together". That's even worse than the Tories who wanted cash but are steadfast in support of NATO.

Peter Oborne likes politicians of conviction, so long as those convictions aren't venal corruption.

He has to be on the right side of history though.

The next posts are worth quoting on that. Obama didn't get Russia as wrong as Trump, but he got it wrong and Romney got it right.

Yet fans of Obama aren't on the internet trying sticking up everything critical he ever said about Russia to cover his arse.

Magical thinking. It's the curse of much of the left, just as the right. Dialectical materialism through to 'Jez is always right'.

It’s a bit like the ultra-petty hair splitting that Peter Hitchens does when people say he writes for the Mail, and he shits the bed because *he* writes for the *Mail on Sunday*.

Corbyn may have been consistent on Putin, but he was also consistent on his forgiveness for/turning a blind eye to the actions of Putin’s Russia - from Stop the War’s very selective choice of what wars to stop to Corbyn’s desire to get Russia’s expert opinion on whether it was one of their nerve agents that killed someone in Salisbury.

Anyone can always be on the right side of history of big, obvious movements if you’re willing to ignore their own history of being catastrophically wrong on occasions where it was much more down to their own personal judgement.

It's much worse than that. Jez doesn't see Eastern Europeans as proper people, just dumb receptacles for US propaganda. And their role is to sit there not offending Russia.

A friend of mine who I've not really spoken to for a few years was always sympathetic to the Eastern bloc to the extent of thinking Stalin wasn't all bad because they were against the Nazis. I can imagine him and Jezza having a lot in common.

All but certain this is nothing to do with the real Jurgen Klopp, but FFS.
