It's significant that almost all the voices urging a retention of the lords come from two groups.
1. Lords
2. Senior parliamentarians whose "service" translates to a near guaranteed lordship.

As far I know that's the norm for former Speakers. Or it was until Johnson failed to bestow a peerage on John Bercow.
