During his Q&A at a Telegraph fringe, the Telegraph writer Tim Stanley asked Robert Jenrick about his Handsworth comments and suggested that if he had gone somewhere “mono-culturally white”, he would not be commenting on the absence of black or brown faces.

As the Telegraph reports, Jenrick replied:

The left do, ‘decolonise the countryside’, ‘decolonise the National Trust’... What I said is it not about the colour of your skin or your faith. My point is that we don’t want to have communities where they do not reflect the breadth of the people who live in our country. I think it’s self-evidently true.
Not only I think is that bad because we want to live in a country where there is a strong sense of togetherness, but at the extreme it leads us down a very dangerous path.

"Decolonize the National Trust", if anyone much ever said that, means acknowledging links of properties to slavery and (what Jenrick says he's interested in) getting the NT membership to more resemble that of the country as a whole. I live in the countryside, have a Green councillor and Green MP. I have never heard either of them or anyone else say "decolonize the countryside".

Handsworth, as the stats I put up shows, is fairly diverse. It's not an exclusively Muslim "ghetto". Is he saying he wants more Asian and Black people should move to Newark?

It’s mostly (the racism aside) the sheer, barefaced lie that Jenrick has perpetrated that is most galling, especially to Brummies that know Handsworth, of which I count myself one. If you were asked to come up with an example of a place in which multi-cultural integration has actually been an outstanding success, you’d come up with Handsworth.

And yet, here we have this reprehensible little chancer lying about Handsworth in order solely to advance his own climb up the greasy pole of Tory politics via performative dog-whistle racism.

I do recall someone (Owen Jones maybe?) suggesting that Penny Lane (which must be one of Britain's most famous roads) should be renamed because it was named after Liverpool slave owner James Penny, online there were calls for the song to be banned as it was 'a celebration of racism' and some road signs were vandalised.

One small problem. The story was bollocks. The name actually predated James Penny and the British slave trade by years and in fact derived from a one penny toll which charged for it's use.

Can't find Owen Jones saying that. Steve Rotheram is the most prominent person to have suggested it might be renamed if there was a proven link. Even if it were named after James Penny the slave trader, it would have been a bad idea to rename it, the road having become known for something completely different and benign. It would have been an interesting bit of history though, which could have made a point.

I suspect he knows Handsworth because there were some riots there back in the day, so thought he'd tap into that.If he wanted to make a point a negative point about Manchester, he'd have shown up to Moss Side, like Chris Grayling did when he wanted to make out it was like The Wire, even though it was by then massively improved.
